The KROBO BEADS Story
The Story Behind Krobo Beads
Krobo beads are handcrafted glass beads made by the Krobo people of Ghana, where the art of bead making has been practised for generations. More than decorative elements, these beads are an important part of Ghanaian culture and have long been worn during significant life events, including naming ceremonies, weddings, festivals, and celebrations.
Each bead begins as recycled glass, which is carefully cleaned and crushed into a fine powder. Skilled artisans then pour the glass powder into handcrafted clay molds, often adding layers of coloured glass to create intricate patterns and vibrant designs. The molds are fired in a kiln, allowing the glass to fuse into beautifully finished beads. Once cooled, every bead is individually cleaned, polished, and inspected by hand.
Because this is an entirely handcrafted process, no two Krobo beads are exactly alike. Small variations in colour, shape, and pattern are not imperfections but the hallmark of authentic craftsmanship, making each bead uniquely beautiful.
By choosing jewellery made with Krobo beads, you are celebrating a centuries-old artistic tradition while supporting skilled Ghanaian artisans who continue to preserve this remarkable craft. Each piece carries a story of heritage, creativity, and sustainability, transforming recycled glass into timeless jewellery with meaning and purpose.
The AFI|AKOS Story
Afi Akos was founded by husband and wife team Richmond and Elom Osei-Akoto. With their Ghanaian heritage, they have always felt a calling from the country. After numerous trips to Ghana, in 2018 they decided to embark on the journey to share the the creativity and craftsmanship of the Ghanaian people that they had encountered with other communities worldwide
“At Afi Akos we just love sharing the beautiful things that we find in Ghana with others, when you find something great you should share it”
Richmond Osei-Akoto Creative Director
We work with a team of designers, artisans and crafters in Ghana and other parts of the African continent, to create timeless products. We specialise in clothing and accessories which blend modern classic styling with Ntoma (African Fabric). All of our items are statement pieces, whether it’s a jumpsuit or a journal, a bodycon dress or a bumbag, people will know when you’ve arrived.
“We aim to create pieces that are loved and cherished by our customers as much as the love that goes into making them”
Richmond Osei-Akoto Creative Director
We are intentional about our product sourcing process and ensure that we only work with creative partners who treat their staff fairly. We work directly with our artisans and manufactures to ensure that those creating and making for us are paid at a rate at least equivalent to what would be regarded as a living wage for the region.
“We make beautiful things, responsibly”
Elom Osei-Akoto Operations Director
We want everyone to connect with Ghana and ultimately the continent of Africa through a different lens. Through the sharing of its artisanship and the beauty of the creativity it exudes.
